For sometime now I have tried to reduce the use of chemicals and cleaning products in my home. My best discovery so far have been this top 5 essential oils. I no longer need to compromise on anything and neither do you!
1. Lavender
Lavender* has more than just a delightful, summery scent. The oil's disinfectant and cleaning powers have long been known. Even before the antimicrobial properties of lavender were discovered, it was used for cleaning purposes.
Lavender oil makes a great kitchen and bathroom cleaner for any household. Place 10 drops of lavender oil in a 500ml spray bottle filled with white vinegar and water (50:50), and you're ready to go. You can easily clean the kitchen and bathroom now.
Another way I use it is to put a few drops of Lavender oil on my Fragrance Free Laundry Eccoegg*. This works best, if you want a touch of fresh scent on your laundry and is good for kids too(bear in mind any allergies they might have). I know that they sell scented ones, but I prefer the Fragrance Free one, as then I can use whatever oil I want and I will know for sure the scent comes from a natural source.
2. Lemon oil
Lemon oil* is known for its antiviral and antibacterial properties. The scent is also great.
It is best used to freshen and clean your fridge. Just add few drops on a wet cloth and wipe away (make sure the oil does not come into contact with your skin or plastics).
I also use it to clean the tops in my kitchen or the glass tables. The light scent is uplifting and delightful and the results are great!
3. Grapefruit oil
You can use the Grapefruit oil* in the same way you use your Lemon oil. This way you will not get used to the same fragrance and stop sensing it over time.
The added benefit however is that the scent the grapefruit oil exudes is known to lower sugar cravings!
So apart from a clean house you might get a slimmer self too!
You can also diffuse it for an uplifting mood and to keep those chocolate cravings away.
3. Tea Tree (Malaleuca) oil
Tea tree oil* can fight germs, bacteria and viruses. It is a handy weapon against bugs too, like ants, flees or lice. Add tea tree to a spray bottle with water, shake well, and spray outside and inside the home to deter lice and other pests.
Or in order to get rid of mould add 2 teaspoons of Tea Tree oil to 2 cups of water in a glass bottle. Shake well and spray the affected area. The mould should disapear soon.
4. Lemongrass oil
I use Lemongrass oil in my dishwasher. Before I used to hang one of those plastic dishwasher fresheners*, as no matter how well I cleaned it it always smelled a bit off without it.
However Lemongrass oil does not just make it smell nicer than before, but it actually kills the bacteria responsible for the unpleasant odour. Same effect have the Lemon and Grapefruit oils too. So it is up to you, what you have and what you want to use.
5. Pine oil
Pine oil* is known to fight fungi, stubborn bacteria and to cleanse the air. You can use it as an ALL-Purpose cleaner. Just add a few drops in a glass bottle filled with water. You can clean the whole house with it. More information about this magic oil you can find here.
BONUS RECIPE
Here is a recipe I use to clean my hard floors. Works for wood, laminate and tiles too.
In a bucket with hot water add a teaspoon of virgin olive oil*, 4 drops of lemongrass oil, 5 drops of Lavender and 5 drops of Tea Tree oil. Make sure to mix well and get rid of the excess water from the mop before you start cleaning. Do not add too much olive oil or you risk to get yourself a slippery floor. You do not need to rinse.
Do deodorise and kill bacteria in carpets, use the same essential oils in a spray bottle, leave out the olive oil.
I wish you health and radiance!
